Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Registers Jamu as an IntangibleCultural Heritage to UNESCO

One of the traditional treatments that have been passed down from generation to generation and
is still practiced today is the culture of drinking jamu.
Support for the Healthy Culture of Jamu was also shown by the government. In March 2022, the
Government through the Ministry Education, Culture, Research and Technology officially
registered jamu as an intangible cultural heritage to UNESCO.
The decision of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology received support,
one of which was from a member of the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres), Putri Kus
Wisnu Wardani. “I appreciate the steps taken by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and
Technology to propose the healthy culture of jamu to become an intangible cultural heritage to
UNESCO,” said Putri.
According to Putri, during a pandemic, a healthy lifestyle through jamu can help many people not
only throughout Indonesia but also in the world. “Moreover, jamu is considered to have helpedmaintain people’s fitness and provide benefits for global health in the midst of a world slumped by
the pandemic, so it is important to encourage jamu to be recognized by UNESCO as a world
cultural heritage,” she continued.
“Jamu also provides many health benefits for the world, even a well-known American film
production house raised the efficacy of jamu in a film entitled Eat, Pray, Love, starring Julia
Roberts when in one scene she recovered through an efficacious jamu,” said Putri.
