Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres) Meets with the Nusantara Student ExecutiveBoard (BEM)

On April 8, 2022, the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres) held a meeting with the
Nusantara Student Executive Board (BEM). Present at the meeting, the Chairman of the
Wantimpres, Wiranto, was accompanied by members of the Wantimpres, Sidarto Danusubroto,
Putri Kus Wisnu Wardani, M. Mardiono and Agung Laksono. From the side of the students who
were present at the warmly meeting, included: A. Marzuki Tukan (Coordinator of Nusantara BEM
throughout Java), Aldi Ibara (Central Coordinator of BEM throughout Sulawesi, Central Board ofBEM Nusantara), Dandi (Governor of Law Faculty of UNPAM), Habib (UIJ Student President),
and Robi Juandry (Secretary General of the Indonesian Student Energy Council (DEM).
At the meeting, a number of issues were discussed intensively and openly, such as the issue of
rising cooking oil prices and cartels, rising food prices ahead of Eid, energy issues, including the
discourse on extending the presidential term to three terms and postponing elections. During the
meeting, Wiranto emphasized that any discourse, including extending the the presidential term,
postponing elections is part of democracy and the right to express opinions is protected by law.
However, Wiranto emphasized that the discourse must be rational and within the corridors of the
Constitution. Our constitution does not allow the extension of the presidential term to three terms.
Even amendments to the Constitution require provisions that are not easily changed in the MPR.
The majority of political parties also do not want amendments to the 1945 Constitution regarding
the extension of the presidential term.
In addition, all institutions, including election organizers, are also not preparing to make changes
to the timing of the election or extending the presidential term. The President himself has
repeatedly emphasized his attitude that he does not want an extension of the presidential term,
including instructing his ministers to stop discussing the extension of the presidential term.
At the end of the discussion, Wiranto invited the students to think more rationally, promote
dialogue and not spend energy on something unproductive.
