Putri Kus Wisnu Wardani, Member of The Presidential Advisory Council, Visited Dairy Farm in New Zealand

Putri Kus Wisnu Wardani, Member of The Presidential Advisory Council, visited Nanik Herminingtyas’s dairy farm named Hill View Dairy Farm in her working visits to New Zealand on Thursday, February 13, 2020.  Nanik is an Indonesian woman married to a Dutch man and had been living in Wellington for 15 years. In the beginning, this farm only had a few cows and still rented the land. But after 15 years, the farm currently have around 700 cows on a 156-hectare plot of land. The cow’s milk produced in this farm is sold to Fonterra, a farmer-owned co-operative and the biggest producer of baby formula milk in the world. Fonterra’s suppliers are required to buy Fonterra’s shares in proportion to their milk supply to the co-operative company. Hill View Dairy Farm is one of the best practices of the collaboration of community farms with co-operatives in New Zealand. The co-operative system in New Zealand allows farmers to own shares as much as their livestock so that the farmers can get benefits from the added value of the milk production. According to Putri’s observation during her visit that was accompanied by Nurmala Kartini Pandjaitan Sjahrir, The Chairwoman of the Indonesian Anthropology Association (AAI), the collaboration system is the key to the large livestock population in New Zealand. The farmers work earnestly because their welfare is guaranteed.  Tantowi Yahya, The Indonesian Ambassador to New Zealand, added that the co-operative system is fully supported by all the state policies and allows farmers to sell their goods with international standards price, thereby benefiting the farmers.
